Thoughts

Sylvia was the daughter of my father’s sister Doreen and her husband Ray. She was older than me and as such was a presence in my life from a very early age. She was also my favourite cousin and the one I got to know best. I remember her living in Gorleston, then moving with Auntie Doreen and Uncle John to Wymondham where I spent holidays in the summer, and after she married and moved to Besthorpe, I also spent summer holidays with her and her family. Later, I moved away and abroad, and we dipped in and out of each others lives, but were always able to pick up where we left off, despite sometimes years between contact. Such people are a rare find. Sylvia’s life was no joyride, often beset with sadness and heartache, starting with the death of her father in the second world war. She faced adversity with stoicism though, as well as humour. There was no one in the world who could make me laugh as much as Sylvia did. Sylvia did not suffer fools gladly, always capable of standing up for herself, but she did so with good natured kindness, and generosity of spirit. When she and Cyril met and married it was the beginning of a whole new world for her, and much happiness for them both, spending time adventuring, trying new experiences, and enjoying their children and grand children. When Cyril sadly passed away, despite her terrible loss, she carried resolutely on, determined to get the most out of life. When she was told of her diagnosis and lack of a real long-term solution, she again took it in her stride, showing no self pity, but instead, determined to carry on as normal and remain as independent as possible. I genuinely thought she might prove the specialists wrong, but sadly this was not to be, and after a sudden setback, and admission to hospital, she passed away quite suddenly but peacefully with Sharen by her side. Even in this she was determined not to cause a fuss . I still cant believe she isn’t here. She has played such a huge part in my life. RIP Sylvia, if anyone deserves to rest in peace, you do xxxxxxxx

Sylvia May Reeve was born in Great Yarmouth, moving to Gorleston then Wymondham before finally settling in Norwich after marrying her husband Cyril. Together they spent many happy years socialising, dancing and travelling with their caravan and campervans. Her 1st love was reading she used to say if she had to choose she would take a book over food which brings me on to her 2nd love, seafood ! She loved it all, from her fish and chip lunches with Peter to her daily salmon treats courtesy of delivery from Warren. Many of you may not know that Sylvia fostered and childminded and her love for children never waned as she adored her sheer volume of grandchildren and great children not forgetting Samuel and Amy ( the dolls) and up to recently she was looking into sponsoring a child. You will all have special memories of Sylvia as a Mum a Nan a Great Nanny a cousin a neighbour and a friend but I think you will all miss that card that she never failed to send and will always remember the dignity and selflessness that she showed when faced with her latest battle and the stoical and stubbornness she showed whilst remaining positive right up until the end.

Dear Grandma, thank you for always looking after us and making our visits so fun. I have such fond memories of coming to visit and hearing your stories (and seeing you keep Grandad in check!) and I remember you always doing everything you could to make sure we were happy. I loved seeing how happy and positive you and grandad were, and Scott and I hope to have a marriage as successful as yours and make you both proud. Sending lots of love and peace to you both xxxxx
